Good Music Is Made From Earth, Air, Fire, and Water

Welcome to another writing challenge response. A little delayed this time around (frantically trying to finish a paper for publication … ).

The challenge was set by the inimitable Steve Goldberg, whose quality musical tastes continue to impress. The challenge?? To curate a song list using the elements.

Now, we’re not talking about the modern, atomic theory, periodic table of elements here. We are using the original, old school Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Greek philosophy claimed that everything in the Universe was made of these elements. The idea that all matter comprised these four elements was the cornerstone of philosophy, science, and medicine for a couple of thousand years.
