Songs by artists from places I’ve lived!
Back in April, Katemiya presented a writing challenge — songs by artists from the places you’ve lived.
She suggested that there must be at least one significant musical act from just about everywhere she has lived. Given that many of us have lived in multiple places over the years, why not have a crack at shining a light on those places by examining the music from there!
The challenge received great response stories from Alex Markham, Arthur Keith, and Hull’s very own David Acaster.
Well, Katemiya, challenge accepted! (Albeit a little late …)
First up, a little bit of background. Australia is, by area, the sixth largest country in the world (behind Russia, Canada, China, US, Brazil). It is actually 1.2 percent bigger than the contiguous 48 US. It is the driest inhabited continent, with 70 percent of land classified as arid (under 350 mm annual rainfall). Much of the population is centred on the eastern seaboard. We have just 26 million people — about 5 million in Sydney, 4.2 million in Melbourne, 3 million in Brisbane area, 2 million in Perth, just over a million in Adelaide, and a whopping 400,000 people in Canberra, our national capital.
I have lived in four places in Australia.
